Energy Saving Bollard Lights

The use of these outside lights is often ideal where light is needed to outline and complement a specified area, for example pathways, steps and walkways. They usually emit light from the top or the sides. A wide range of outdoor lighting is available to suit all tastes in many different designs, materials, and colours.

Typically, outdoor lights are IP rated for exterior use. An IP rating is used to determine how protected a product isagainst various factors such as water, dust, intrusion of objects (including hands and fingers), and accidental contact. Many bollards are now available with energy efficient bulbs, CFLs, LED's and also halogen bulbs.

Most bollards can be installed with relative ease, although it's mainly electricians who will wire most outdoor lights in to the mains current to be safe. The lights can either be root mounted straight into the ground, or can be fixed externally into the ground at the mounting base of the bollard. Good quality Bollard lightings should be rust free, and it helps if they're made of Aluminium or Stainless steel with heavy duty aluminium die-cast components.

The term bollard is actually a nautical term which is the name of a metal post to which ships tie up on a dock. Many are used in Car Parks and on pavements to prevent vehicles from parking on them. As they are designed for outside use it is important that they are weatherproof. The minimum acceptable level of protection is IP44; in exposed areas a rating of IP65 is to be preferred.

Today it is a good idea to use energy saving light bulbs within the luminaire. Some bollards feature directional lighting and can be used to illuminate an architectural feature, mostly though the light will be spread out evenly in a circular pattern around the bollard. For example a green bulb could enhance plant foliage whereas blue bulbs would look very modern in a Hotel car park. Some are made from weather resistant plastic but these are obviously more fragile than the metal types.

On the top of the tube is situated the luminaire which is usually made from die cast metal. Solar power can be used but is normally only suitable in countries that experience higher levels of sunshine such as Spain, Italy, and South Africa etc. The LEDS will typically last for 10 years or more without replacement and consume minimal amounts of electricity.
